Room on the Broom

The story we have been reading the last 3 weeks has been Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson! We have learnt about the different characters, heled retell the story using a story map, identifying the beginning, middle and end. We have even changed the end of the story, using our imagination to think up different things the witch could make with her spell!

You can listen to the story at home together here

Ask your children what they remember about the story! Who are the characters? What does the dragon want to do? What happens at the end of the story? Did they enjoy the story? Why?

Next week we are moving on to look at another story by the same author: Stickman!

How to count!

This week we have be continuing looking at number 5 and also getting really good at our counting skills.

We have learnt that to count there are 3 rues

1: Say the number names in order 1,2,3,4,5!

2: Say one number for each object (pointing to each as you say them can help you not to forget any!)

3. The last number you say is the total of how many there are.

Watch the Number blocks exploring these skills:

Off we go!

How to count!

Counting is a difficult skill - there is a lot to remember! Make sure you practice counting small groups (up to 5 to start) pointing to each, saying the names in order and remembering to say how many the total is!

Thursday Fun!

This term our Thursday mornings have got even more exciting! After phonics the children have the chance to participate in a range of activities - art, music, cooking, visiting the goats and looking at our curriculum question which has been " Why are there so many leaves on the ground?"

We have learnt about a Japanese artist who loves spots called Yayoi Kusama, making clay pumpkins and dotty pictures in her style.

We have made and tasted vegetable soup, using fantastic chopping skills and finding out about some different vegetables!

We have found out all about Autumn and why all the leaves fall down off the trees. We have investigated the leaves we have found looking closely at the shapes and colours.

We have also sung some familiar nursery rhymes in Music sessions and got to know our goat mascots even better. (The children are all increasing in confidence when meeting them - even the larger Nubian goats!) We found they really like to eat the brown autumn leaves!

I wonder what will we learn in the second half of term?!

Number 5

This week we started learning about number 5!

We have learnt that 5 is 4 and 1 more,

that there are 5 fingers one hand and we have experimented with different ways of representing number 5 including the dice pattern:

Learn all about number five by watching the  Numberblocks video here.

Then see if you can find 5 things around your house!
