Merry Christmas!

It has been such a busy term!

The last few weeks we have been learning lots about the different celebrations that we have with our families and how we celebrate them.

We have been reading Stickman by Julia Donaldson as a focus story (you can listen to it here!)

We have had lost of fun celebrating Christmas, making mince pies, running in our Santa Dash, Mums visiting for our Singalong and Christmas Lunch!

Whole and Part

The last 2 weeks we have been learning what the words whole and part mean and exploring how the whole numbers 1,2,3,4,and 5 can be separated into 2 parts!

Watch the Numberblocks episode "The Whole of me" here.

"Whole" and "part" can be difficult for young children to understand. Sometimes children get mixed up between the words hole and whole!

Use the language lots at home! For example: Would you like a whole apple/cake?

Your whole family is ... You are a part of the family.

Or play a game where you hide an object, leaving just a part of it visible and ask your child if they can guess what the whole object is?

Is it equal?

This week we have continued exploring numbers within 5 and learning what the word equal means!

Equal means exactly the same amount!

We have looked closely groups of  objects to see when they have an equal number.

We have explored if it matters how the items are placed or if they are further apart or arranged differently, are they still equal? (Of course if the amount is the same!)

Are these two groups equal?

How about these?

You could play a game at home - find a small group of objects (between 1 and 5) Anything will do, coins, lego, bottle tops or pegs for example.  Ask if your child can make a group of an equal number?

Use the word lots at home, again meal times is a great time e.g "Everyone has an equal number of fishfingers on their plate, they all have 2!
