More number 4!

This week we have been continued exploring number four and have created and found square shapes, learning that a square has 4 corners and 4 sides!

Watch the Numberblocks "3 little pigs" episode here to learn more about number 4.

We have also been learning about some important new mathematical language "more" and fewer"!

We practiced noticing who had more and who had fewer toys to play with and who had knocked down more skittles in our bowling outside! This is important language that is easy to practice at home. Meal times is a great time to explore looking at who has "more" peas on the plate, who has "fewer" chips than you!
Have a go at home!

Number 4

This week we have started learning about Number 4!

Click the link here to meet number 4!

We have found out that we need 1, another 1, another 1 and another 1 to make 4!

We have sorted objects into 2 groups: those that show 4 and those that do not!

We have experimented with the different shapes that 4 cubes can make.

Why don't you go on a number 4 hunt around your house? What will you find?

Here is a collection I made at home -  if you make your own 4 collection at home you could send a photo it to reception@hovingham.org

More about Number 3!

This week we have continued exploring number 3. This has included subitising (recognising a small number of objects without counting) and looking for small groups of 1,2, and 3 in larger groups of objects.

You could try this at home with a plate and some small objects like raisins, blueberries or cheerios!

Put some on a plate a bit like this and see if you can find groups of 1,2 or 3 quickly. Encourage your child to talk about what they can see and how they knew it was 1,2 or 3!

We have also been exploring triangles of different kinds. All triangles have 3 corners and 3 sides but they can look quite different! Maybe you could go on a triangle hunt around your house, or outside on a walk this half term!

The Smeds and the Smoos!

We have been reading the story The Smeds and the Smoos by Julia Donaldson. The children have loved it and are getting really good at starting to talk about the story and what they remember!

Just look at the wonderful work they have done for our display to celebrate the story!

Have a listen at home by clicking here!

Number 3!

This week we have started learning all about the number 3! We have been looking for 3 objects and are continuing to practise subitising small groups of 1,2 and 3 objects (this means we can see quickly how many there are without counting!), we are getting really fast at this now!

You could watch the number blocks episode 3 here

See if you can find 3 of something around your house this weekend!
